Tasting Notes
It would be difficult to find a more classically Médoc wine than this great Cantemerle, with its sustained power and refined elegance. A very deep color and subtle aromas underscore its youth. Once in the mouth, this rich and full-bodied wine releases notes of coffee, olives and licorice which are emphasized by an opulent and harmonious length. A fine wine which marries fullness and delicacy, while avoiding heaviness and excessive oak. It’s the perfect expression of a balanced Bordeaux which gives voice to a great terroir. This wine has a promising future, and already offers great satisfaction with all meat and poultry, as well as alpine cheeses.
Critic Reviews
James Suckling: 92 Points
This red shows some cassis, blueberries and floral notes on the nose. Some tar, too. Medium to full body, juicy tannins and a fruity finish. Enticing wine. Drink now or hold.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: 89-91 Points (Barrel Sample)
Cantemerle’s ethereal elegance and racy, classy style are unmistakable in this understated yet pretty, dark ruby-colored 2012. Offering lots of cherry, raspberry and black currant fruit, this is a wine of unmistakable finesse and delicacy.
Food Pairing
Distinguished and subtle, Cantemerle’s wine is not lacking in power. It accompanies many traditional local foods like cepes and roast poultry. Its delicate character also makes a satisfying match for finer river fish (pikeperch, char, trout) as well as shellfish like scallops and lightly sautéed crayfish tails.
With cheese, it’s best to avoid the too-salty blue types and instead choose pressed, raw-milk varieties like Reblochon, Saint Nectaire, Cantal, Ossau-lraty and Manchego. As for the ever-popular Camembert from our Normandy region, a good cider would be preferable. Finally, if the meal concludes with dessert, a very young, fruity vintage of Allées de Cantemerle goes well with a Black Chocolate Parfait or a Hazelnut Tart.
In any case, the serving temperature should not exceed 19ºC. It can even be brought to 16ºC to accompany seafood and the dessert cart.

Description
THE PROPERTY
Located in the southern part of the Bordeaux Medoc peninsula near the villages of Macau & Ludon, Chateau Cantemerle, designated a great growth in the famous 1855 classification, has deep gravel soil. Thanks to its unique terroir, Cantemerle produces complex, well-balanced, and refined wines.
After belonging to the Villeneuve (1579-189z) and Dubos (189z-1980) families, the chateau was acquired in 1981 by Groupe SMA, a large mutual
insurance company in the construction and civil engineering sector. The estate’s long history is reflected in the chateau’s distinctive architecture and the magnificent grounds that surround it. Cantemerle exudes romantic charm and its wine has a magical feel to it!
THE CANTEMERLE STYLE
This unique soil and microclimate are reflected in the wine’s personality. Cantemerle has a brilliant colour, a powerful bouquet, and a soft, lively flavour. It is rare to find such refined fruitiness. This great wine can be enjoyed young, when it is charming, fruity, and marked by a vanilla taste which comes from well-integrated oak.
This makes Cantemerle an ideal choice for the modern wine drinker who likes fresh tannins. However, it can also age extremely well. Fine, old vintages have impeccable class, with incomparable flavours of sheer elegance. Cantemerle therefore belongs to that rare category of the world’s wines which can not only age, but also improve over several decades.
